ABSTRACT

For example, a school might want to address the issue of summer reading. Experience shows that teachers aren’t following through in the fall. The principal believes that providing an incentive to students would help solve the problem, so she proposes allowing students who read at least four of the books to spend their study hall hour in a comfortable area of the library instead of at their desks. (She considers establishing consequences for those who don’t read, but decides against this.) Enlisting a group of teachers who support the plan, she works out the details and sends a memo home with the reading list in June. Come September, she will observe what happens and perhaps start a new cycle.
