ABSTRACT

In this book I have examined evidence for the existence of Sennett’s ‘work culture of new capitalism’ in UK organizations at the turn of the twenty-rst century and considered what that means for white-collar workers’ satisfaction. I have set out to provide an historical analysis of the nature and impact of the neo-liberal ‘new work culture’ on white-collar workers in the UK during the period 1997-2016, focusing more particularly on the period 2000-6. I have drawn on a variety of literature and research data to examine evidence for the claims made by Harry Braverman in his book Labor and Monopoly Capital (1974), which was in a sense a cry of protest against the degradation of work in late Modernity.
