ABSTRACT
All amateur activities, as far as we know, can be classified under the headings of art, entertainment, sport and science. The latter includes the applied sciences, among them computer science and ham radio. In this chapter we describe the amateur-professional nature of each type; that is, how each may be considered a kind of serious pursuit. We also explore how amateur activities articulate with casual and project-based leisure.
