ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the book. Over the last few decades, the governance of higher education invokes a considerable amount of interest at the institutional and system levels. Policy-makers, higher education practitioners, and academics have been interested in the complex relationships between universities and the state, the internal governance of institutions of higher education, and the impact and implications of reforms. This book creates a foundational text designed to introduce many of the basic concepts and theories associated with university governance. While the study of higher education governance is built on a foundation of significant contributions from leading scholars, others are focusing primarily on descriptive analyses of governance at both the institutional and system levels. The reflexive interplay between the state, university, academics and students, illustrates how the group, institutional and the system levels, intersect and the ways in which structures and processes regulate interactions across these levels to govern higher education.
