ABSTRACT

This conclusion chapter presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The main indicators of national income accounting used by economists GNP, balance of payments, inflation to convey the nature and seriousness of the situation we face. Economics can play an important role in creating such policies and strategies if it is back into its human and environmental context. By listing some possible ways of taking the argument for alternative economic indicators, More accurate and more comprehensive collection of data, especially environmental data in countries particularly dependent on forest and other natural resources. Countries which are poor in most other ways tend also poor in data. Smug assessments of the world economic situation challenged with data about malnutrition, mass poverty, infant deaths, and desertification. Although reforms within the existing framework are not the preferred strategy argued for in this book, they would nevertheless represent important improvements on the existing situation.
