ABSTRACT
Understanding of human disease was hampered by the persistence of Galen’s four humours theory throughout Western medicine. The nature of infection and the transmission of contagious diseases were not fully understood and doctors were unable to cope with the epidemics that swept Western Europe in the Middle Ages.
