ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the basic principles of behavior that focus on being positive with students and providing support for appropriate behavior as a basic means of preventing problem behaviors. The foremost here is the essential basic principle on positive behavior. This essential principle supports engaging students in learning. There is a clear link between behavior and learning and the use of reinforcement and punishment to increase appropriate behaviors. To gain a basic understanding of Least Restrictive Behavioral Interventions (LRBI) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as one focuses on learning/teaching rather than behavior. A basic understanding of the legal basis for behavior management, including professional standards for teachers and paraprofessionals, helps to know where one recognized in this area. School personnel focused on the inappropriate behaviors displayed by students before looking toward the antecedents, the events that precede the inappropriate behaviors. The theory of Operant Conditioning focuses on making behaviors more or less likely to reoccur.
