ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the principles of Least Restrictive Behavioral Interventions (LRBI), in relation to the rewards people make available to students. Sadly, some schools have serious incidents such as shootings, gang activities, and drug-related violence. This underscores the need for the development of an effective organizational structure to promote appropriate social behavior in school settings. The most basic of planning and teaching strategies that makes the classroom function are: effective instruction that is designed to meet the students learning needs, teaching appropriate behaviors through a positive approach, clearly defining expectations, rewarding and recognizing students for their appropriate behavior. The LRBI approach originated as a plan developed by the Utah State Office of Education to assure that students with disabilities receive an appropriate education. The plan gives best practice suggestions for the protection of student rights to teachers, school personnel, Local Education Authorities (LEAs), and incorporates a model of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Response to Intervention (RtI).
