ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the benefits of using at-home exercises as an adjunct to sex therapy. The process of homework requires a strong therapeutic relationship, trust, collaboration and a clear statement of commitment. Additionally, homework assignments are often prescribed for specific sexual problems. It is found that homework requires understanding of various principles and strategies in order to be implemented properly. In order to understand what contributed to not doing the homework, one's view is to discuss the couple's relational issues first, as well as their readiness for change and emotions about doing the homework. The homework should match the clients physical abilities and be considerate of their resources-including free time, schedules and finances. The object of the homework was to help couple slowly reach their goal of sexual intimacy by keeping anxiety low, success high and by explaining that each link in the chain was a step toward their goal.
