ABSTRACT

Psychoeducation is commonly used in sex therapy and is considered to be one of the most effective evidence-based practices in psychotherapy. Bibliotherapy involves using selected reading material to assist clients in solving particular issues. In sex therapy, bibliotherapy serves as a form of psychoeducation, providing accurate information that replaces mythological thinking. Bibliotherapy could involve reading books or Internet-based materials, viewing videos, watching selected television shows or any other form of media that would be considered psychoeducational. Sexuality books cut across a wide variety of presenting problems and issues specific to sex therapy. Videos, DVDs, and multimedia can provide a great deal of psychoeducation for clients struggling with sexual issues. There are also several major Internet sites that refer people to further information on books and films among other resources. Couples who are interested in sadomasochism (S&M) or bondage and discipline (B&D) may find little in the local bookstore, but a search on the Internet will offer up plenty of material.
