ABSTRACT

This chapter provides specific treatment strategies to counter the most commonly occurring sexual dysfunctions related to particular health conditions. One need more help in accepting the realities of aging and modifying their sexual scripts, expanding the sexual repertoire, improving communication. The chapter discusses on expansion of the sexual repertoire, the couple is helped to appreciate pleasurable activities as a goal state. Prostate cancer is particularly distressing for men because of the real possibility of losing either sexual functioning or one's life. Maladies such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke and other neurological disorders can directly affect the physiological response involved in sexual functioning. Medications used to treat cardiovascular illnesses, such as beta-blockers and thiazide diuretics, can also adversely impact sexual functioning. A major component of psychotherapy for specific medical populations involves psychoeducation for the therapist about the particular issues a client may be experiencing. Basic psychoeducation is, therefore, an important element of treatment for the client as well as therapist.
