ABSTRACT

Rigorous professional and ethical standards apply to traditional psychotherapy. Sex therapists, however, have unique considerations beyond standard ethical issues, primarily because of the nature of their work. This chapter reviews specifi c obligatory concerns in sex therapy treatment, such as the responsibility of the therapist to understand his or her own ethical vulnerabilities that could obstruct treatment and a safe environment for the therapeutic work involving sexuality. Some of these issues involve the person of the therapist while others affect the way a case is identifi ed, assessed and treated.
