ABSTRACT

Treating absent/low sexual desire category includes two gender-based diagnoses: Male Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder and Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder. In light of the fact that little research has demonstrated the need for different treatment protocols for men and women, that combined treatment and simply refers to the diagnostic categories as absent or low sexual desire in both genders. Absent/low sexual desire requires a great deal of flexibility on the part of the therapist. This chapter reviews the current diagnostic criteria for absent or low sexual desire in men and women documented in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Homework must be tailored for absent/low sexual desire in couples. Therapists who practice sex therapy must not only receive training, credentials and supervision, but they must be committed to making sex therapy a major component of their practices in order to acquire the continuing experience necessary to perfect their implementation skills.
