ABSTRACT

World peace is as elusive as it is desirable. It is chimerical in nature, reminding people of the tale of Sisyphus and his fabled boulder. The Foundation soon became international in scope, holding four conferences in Petra, Jordan, under the joint sponsorship of The King Abdullah II Fund for Development and The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity. The issue of the West Bank and the Palestinians, among other topics, was raised at Petra IV under the general heading “Growth and Economic Development in the Middle East: The Way Forward.” In America, the Wiesel Foundation annually sponsors the Elie Wiesel Ethics Essay Contest, which is open to American university juniors and seniors. The goal of these conferences is to help “create a world in which atrocities such as the Holocaust, and genocide in Rwanda and Darfur and ethnic cleansing” in Bosnia are never forgotten, but also never repeated.
