ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on dramatic literature and theatrical performance of Shakespearian play. Sir John had a comment on the Hamlet-Horatio conversation at the beginning of the last scene. But once Sir John decided that something was no. right, it was out. Sir John pushed on rapidly with a minimum of discussion or review, expecting the actor to retain much. The Hamlet he played was his own, and Sir John only made suggestions to Burton and did not demand strict adherence to them. Richard Burton walked through the first blocking rehearsals with the complete Cambridge text in his hand. He made no notes at rehearsals. The Laertes farewell scene, in which Polonius gives the famous parting advice to his son, was rehearsed in the same manner: worked through for movements and interpretation slowly, and then repeated with few interruptions.
