ABSTRACT

This session is comprised of three modules: Module 20: Riding the wave; Module 21: Being mindful; and Module 22: Self-soothing. All three modules are based on acceptance strategies on the right-hand side of the coping tree. Until now, we have focused on CBT change strategies, so that the young person has the skills to manage their emotions and effect change in their thoughts, behaviours and emotions. However, there are Times when it is more difficult to affect change, so the young person needs to learn how to tolerate their distress and become more aware of their feelings (rather than fighting them all the Time). In addition, we teach the skill of self-acceptance leading to self-soothing. Here, the goal is to increase self-esteem and self-worth.
