ABSTRACT

Resilience has been defined as “good outcomes in spite of serious threats to adaptation or development” (Masten, 2001, p. 228). Basically, resilience is the ability to persist in the face of challenges and to bounce back from adversity. Based on decades of research on this topic, a movement has started that involves creating classrooms that foster student resilience. Resilient classrooms have been described as “places where all children can be successful emotionally, academically and socially” (Doll, Brehm, & Zucker, 2014, p. 7). This approach emphasizes that educators can deliberately create resilient classrooms by designing healthy environments for learning that enhance students’ academic skills and foster their social-emotional well-being. Thus, this approach focuses on “changing classrooms, not kids” (Doll et al., 2014, p.7).
