ABSTRACT

Dostoyevsky’s classic novel, Anna Karenina, begins with the famous words: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Similarly, all safe and supportive schools share similar characteristics; however, schools that fail in this regard do so in many different ways. According to the latest research, safe and supportive schools have a healthy school climate, which involves providing students with rich instruction, ample opportunities to interact with others, and the security they need to feel safe at schools, as well as social support from key peers, educators, caregivers, and other members of school communities (Cowan, Vaillancourt, Rossen, & Pollitt, 2013; Dwyer, Osher, & Warger, 1998; O’Malley & Eklund, 2012).
