ABSTRACT

School-wide positive behavior support (SWPBS) is a proactive, systematic, and inherently positive approach to engendering meaningful behavioral and educational change in school settings (Simonsen & Sugai, 2009). Essentially, SWPBS is a system of behavioral strategies and supports that are implemented to improve the outcomes of all members of the school community as well as to improve the overall climate in schools.1 Therefore, SWPBS is broad in its scope and it is applicable to all K-12 educational settings (Sugai & Horner, 2006). As an increasingly important and popular movement to improve students’ behavior, SWPBS and how it can be applied by educators in school settings are discussed in this chapter. In addition, empirical support for SWPBS is discussed and service delivery is covered within a multi-tiered framework. Although this chapter is not an exhaustive review on the use of positive behavior support intervention strategies in school settings, it provides a foundation on which subsequent knowledge and experience with this topic can be built.
