ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the theoretical tools and concepts to think about, analyse and explain the two case studies. It introduces Foucault's work on power, resistance and the subject. The chapter explains how notion of ethics was developed out of his earlier work on discourse, knowledge and genealogies of power to provide an analysis of the subject that allows for action that examined in the case studies. It presents ethical tools as requisite to pursuing socially just leadership within the demands of the current climate. The chapter illustrates how they help leaders to address the multidimensionality of injustices confronting schools and education systems their economic, cultural and political dimensions. It reviews notion of counter-conduct to analyse the ways in which the leaders of the two case studies work to counter the modes of subjection that work to aims that do not align with their ideas of what is important and necessary in their schools and communities.
