ABSTRACT

This chapter has introduced the case study of Ridgeway State High School and its principal, Carol. The background context of this school is key to understanding and analysing the leadership practices that are currently undertaken in the school. Ridgeway is a school that presents significant challenges for its principal and the rest of the leadership team, including aspects of long-term poverty, violence, abuse, poor housing and high ESL needs, to name a few. These challenges have led Carol to pursue a telos of social justice that she considers essential and central to her work as principal in order for good teaching and learning to occur. The chapter used Foucault's notion of telos a part of his ethical framework to show how this is a key aspect of the formation of Carol as an ethical subject. The data for this chapter and the next come from one school site that formed part of a much larger research project.
