ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that a written description of a person will depend on the purpose of the description. If people are describing a character in a story, they will give details of the person's character as well as their appearance. Invite the children to write a description of a person in the form of a poem which not only describes the person's appearance but also describes their character. For example, the description of a town or village in a guide book or in an encyclopaedia will be written differently from a description of that town or village, which is being included in order to describe the setting for a story. The chapter also examines that a written description of a place will depend on the purpose of the description. Abingdon-on-Thame is one of the oldest towns in England situated on the river Thames with no railway service.
