ABSTRACT

Explanations provide information about how to do something, how something works or why something happens or happened in the past. There are two types of explanations depending on their purpose. They are explanations which focuses on 'how' and explanations which focus on 'why'. These include directions of how to get somewhere, instructions on how to do something or how to make something and recipes of how to make foods and also when writing about historical events, such as why the Vikings invaded Britain. Here people use the activity sheet to know the explanations for how something works. Pupils are often asked to write explanations of why something happens as part of a science topic. There are many opportunities for writing explanations in science lessons, for example an explanation of why some objects float, while others sink.
