The features of the different types of traditional story such as fairy tales, myths, legends and fables explored here can provide a range of opportunities for creative writing. Fairy tales are traditional tales that include elements of magic or the supernatural, such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. There are a number of opportunities for various different kinds of writing during a focus on fairy tales. The children also encouraged to use the internet to research fairy tales from other countries. Then challenge them to rewrite the fairy tale in 100 words or less. Here legends are explained as stories about great heroes and heroines, kings and queens. Often, the legendary figure is based on a real person, such as King Arthur or Robin Hood and discusses how different countries have different legendary figures to introduce the Swiss legend of William Tell.
