ABSTRACT

The children are encouraged to keep vocabulary books in which they write new words which they encounter both in class and in their private reading. Word walls are a useful tool not only for extending pupil vocabulary, but also for reminding them of how words are spelt. Word walls can be used to collect words connected with a particular topic, for example a history topic, such as the Egyptians, or a more general topic, such as water, to collect powerful words, such as adjectives to use in a particular type of writing, for example descriptions, or, more generally, to collect new words that will help to extend pupil vocabularies. Whichever type of word wall you decide to use, encourage the children to add new words to the wall when they encounter them. Once you have sufficient words on the wall, there are a number of games you can play to help them to remember the words and what they mean.
