ABSTRACT

The words of the English language work together in speech and writing is known as the structure of the language. The structure and the rules governing it are called its grammar. Knowledge of grammar can help children to write correctly. The activities in this section are designed to help children to understand some basic rules of English grammar and the terms used to describe them. There are four types of sentence, depending on what the purpose of the sentence is. They are Statement, Question, Command and Exclamation. They start with some common nouns, such as horse, car and moon, and then make the task more difficult by giving key words, such as different, absurd and hope. Words can be divided into word classes according to the way they are used in sentences. There are eight main word classes in English: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions and articles. These are also known as the parts of speech.
