ABSTRACT

A diary is a personal record of daily events and of a person's thoughts and feelings. Other people keep a diary to record and comment on the day's events from a personal perspective. These diaries may be read by others beside the person himself or herself, such as family members and friends. Encourage the pupils to keep a diary for a week by giving them some time each day to write their entries in note form. At the end of the week ask them to choose one of the entries and to expand it into a recount. As part of a history topic, the pupils can imagine what the life of a person would have been like and write a diary entry about their life. Groups of abler readers can study Zlata's Diary by Zlata Filipovic about life in Sarajevo during its siege.
