ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on formal letters, while the chapter on messages focuses on informal messages, such as text messages, e-mails and letters. A letter is a piece of writing which is addressed to a person or an organisation and usually delivered by post or e-mail. Choose the ones that are more appropriate in a formal letter and then cross out the ones that are inappropriate because they use informal language. Ask the pupil in pairs to study the letter of complaint and to choose which phrases are more formal and, therefore, more appropriate in a formal letter. Use Activity sheet to show pupil the layout of a formal letter and discuss where to put the addresses, the date and the greeting, and how to end the letter. They can also draft formal e-mails or letters, for example to a local place of interest, enquiring about what happens during the day and about how much it costs and how to book places.
