ABSTRACT
Messages are short pieces of writing that can be exchanged over the internet by computers and by devices such as mobile phones, iPhones, iPads and iPods. One can send messages to your friends by e-mail or chat to them on social networking sites, such as Facebook. Text messaging is a very informal way of communicating and that in order to keep text messages short, lots of abbreviations are used and punctuation is largely ignored. This is acceptable when you are texting your friends or chatting to them. However, it is not appropriate to use abbreviations and to ignore punctuation in most types of writing. Another common use of text messages is to make arrangements. As part of a history topic they can send text messages home from sailors involved in famous voyages of discovery, from explorers who took part in epic journeys or from soldiers who took part in invasions, such as the Viking and Roman invasions of Britain.
