ABSTRACT

Listening through documentation is a common practice when the primary focus is not on learning processes but on supporting children's participation in education more generally. The Mosaic approach combines observation, interviewing and participatory tools to listen to young children's perspectives. This chapter considers the child's documented views which are transformed into interaction between adults. It specifically focuses on how they are considered in a discussion between parents and educators. To illuminate the process, the chapter presents an empirical example from a study on teacher-parent meetings regarding the child's individual educational plan (IEP). The chapter focuses on children's voices quite 'literally'. It examines how children's documented views and often 'quoted' talk are discussed in parent-teacher interaction. The chapter illuminates the multitude of challenges in documenting children's perspectives. These challenges are not limited to learning how to do the actual documentation and how to be reflective on one's frames of making sense of children's talk and behaviour.
