ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on discipline and students with disabilities. While the behavior is critical for students with disabilities. Without good behavior they cannot be effectively included in general classrooms settings, their behaviors may impede their ability to achieve academic and social success, and may interfere with the learning of other students. The critical component of discipline and students with disabilities deals with the removal from their current placement, which could impact on their receiving free appropriate public education (FAPE). Regarding removal of students, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IEDA's) primary concern is that students with disabilities are not punished because of behaviors directly related to their disability. The Office of Special Education programs suggest using the functional behavior assessment when students with disabilities begin displaying behavior problems. The purpose of a functional behavior assessment is to provide information for the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to use to develop a behavior intervention plan (BIP) which is a requirement of IDEA.
