ABSTRACT

The last 60 years have brought about huge strides in the approaches we use in behavioral health 1 diagnostic methodology and treatment. We have gone from an age of using insulin shock therapy to treat schizophrenia, using lobotomies to address mental illness, epilepsy, and even chronic headaches, and the use of very restrictive service environments to a more novel approach as to how we view behavioral health needs and mental illness. This new approach to behavioral health is based on how we view consumers. 2 How we look at consumers with behavioral health needs dictates the approaches we take in treatment.
