ABSTRACT
Observation, auditing and qualitative site analysis techniques are a crucial part of the planner’s methodological repertoire. This chapter explains how to use such techniques in a manner that is systematic and rigorous, how to analyse the collected data and how to present findings. It outlines some key principles of instrument design and adaptation for purpose, and points out some of the limitations of relying on visual observation alone.
