ABSTRACT

Just as central cities continue to change, so too have the policy issues and the accompanying research questions that have evolved in response to these changes. Land use surveys help to monitor land use change and support policy and planning initiatives, in particular by identifying key economic sectors and highlighting significant trends and distributions in the use of land. This chapter explains and examines the core principles of planning and conducting a land use survey, with a focus on the policy–research nexus and the challenges that confront researchers responding to changing urban policy.
