ABSTRACT
Planning students often struggle with the instruction to ‘include theory’ in their research. This chapter addresses the role that theory plays in shaping research questions and methods, as well as positioning research projects within a wider body of knowledge, flagging the importance of the literature review as a crucial element of both academic and professional research – a matter to be taken up in Interlude 2. It concludes with some practical steps for finding the ‘right’ theory.
