ABSTRACT

In the 1960s and 1970s, American citizens launched a large-scale environmental protection movement in response to anxiety over industrial development and fear of environmental pollution. Today, a similar environmental movement is emerging in China. In this chapter, we discuss the state of the environmental movement in China and some general characteristics of citizen environmentalists. We then present cases that exemplify three central concerns of the movement: nuclear technology, chemicals, and metals. In the Road Ahead section, we discuss the future of environmental protection in China.
