ABSTRACT

In Chinese culture, “face” is a concept similar to honor. An example from the television show Star Trek may help Westerners understand the importance of face to the Chinese. A Klingon values honor above everything else. In fact, the guiding principles for the Klingon species are documented in a tome entitled The Book of Honor. Klingons cherish honor so much that they are willing to die in order to preserve it. Likewise, sometimes there are disagreements about what constitutes an honorable action in a given situation. In China, face is quite analogous to the Klingons’ honor.
