ABSTRACT

Since ancient times, the Chinese have been teaching younger generations to “read 10,000 books, and walk 10,000 miles” in their quest for knowledge and experience. As early as the Tang Dynasty, stories circulated widely about Monk Xuan Zang visiting India in pursuit of enlightenment from Buddhist scriptures and Monk Jian Zhen crossing the ocean to Japan. These were perhaps the earliest Chinese pioneers in overseas education.
