ABSTRACT

This chapter synthesizes the Israeli policies of urbicide, spacio-cide by construction and control in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). It discusses the notion of urban/territorial destruction the focus is pretty much on the Zionist Israeli side of the story, as the destruction in this historical episode taking place in Palestine. The chapter examines that the destruction of the Palestinian urbanity/territoriality by the different forms discussed above composes urbicide, on the one hand, when destruction/construction is discussed on the scale of urban settlements. It deals with the Israeli construction policies in the OPT. The chapter shows that spacio-cide and urbicide deliberately target identity in its broader term and that this identity transformation is more evident on the territorial scale. The destruction of the territorial identity by spacio-cide was derived by the perceptions and meanings the Holy Land was associated with in the Zionist ideology.
