ABSTRACT

The following scenario (Case Study 2.1) will be referred to throughout the chapter in order to help the student apply the topics discussed.

This chapter will explore the social construction of childhood, alongside basic genetics and variations in growth and development; examination will also include assessment of physical and developmental growth to include discussion of developmental milestones. Important developmental theories will be discussed including Piaget, Freud, Vygotsky, Erikson, Bronfenbrenner, Skinner and Watson, from birth to adolescence. Attachment theories will also acknowledge Bowlby, while language development will include Chomsky, Brunner and developmental theorists. Alongside this moral development, we reflect on Piaget, Kolhberg, Berryman and Gilligan. A child’s temperament and the value of an understanding of normative play will also be highlighted.
