ABSTRACT

Over the last 15 to 20 years extensive work has been done by specialists in the fields of learning disability nursing and social care to change and amend various policies at national and local level, to highlight the health needs of this population and to raise awareness of the disparities in healthcare access that many face, in turn causing the LD population to fall into a marginalised community. However, common social factors can cause the LD population to encounter double or triple discrimination in health and social care environments: some of these factors include the ageing population, sexual choice and expression, parenting, ethnicity and culture.
