ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of its basic framework and the ways in which people can make the transition to this model and achieve our ultimate goals. As the earth becomes increasingly crowded, and theoretically everyone can engage in 'free and fair competition', the result will be a handful of winners and a majority of losers, who lack the resources to earn their livelihood and are reduced to dire poverty. Measures designed to reduce vehicle emissions such as adjusting carburettors, using gasoline additives and installing exhaust gas absorbers, will fail fundamentally to improve the quality of urban life, and so it is crucial to limit demand for the private car in large cities. Similar measures for heating and cooling buildings can be equally effective. Once people's basic needs have been met and society moves to the next stage, therefore, concepts of quality of life may differ widely, and these differences will have real consequences to the environment and society.
