ABSTRACT

The 'classic' development model relies on deficit spending, which makes it attractive to people who focus on short-term aims at the expense of long-term aims. The 'successes' of the 'classic' model of development are more than a garment whose many colors blind people to the fact that it is full of holes and hides the crudest of flaws within it. According to Lepatte, Herman Daly has suggested that three new accounts, such as costs, profits and capital, be set up on the basis of resources and consumption. Hunter-gatherer and agricultural societies are basically characterized by the use of renewable resources, and these are renewable within a human time scale. Other than for land, there is no difference in order of magnitude between use and renewal of resources. Solar energy technology is most economical when used in smaller economic units. However, the future of humankind, in post-industrialized or post-Western societies, lies in solar energy.
