ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of key international standards, guidelines and legislation (collectively termed ‘policy’) affecting sustainability in global trade in general and impacting on purchasing in particular. In line with the focus of this book, this overview examines those frameworks that are developed to support sustainability imperatives set by international organizations and institutions. This chapter does not aim to cover all policies exhaustively, but instead shows the types of policies and some examples of each. Thus this chapter provides insights into how purchasing and supply decisions may be affected by sustainability related policy.
