ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book first investigates, principles and criteria for sustainable forest management in the case of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) at the global and subsequently at the national or regional level. It then traces the themes of commodities and culture and links them to the circuits of knowledge that defines the FSC. Wood, whether certified good wood or the regular type, is a commodity. The book also investigates about "Putting Knowledge to Work", and deals with workers and auditors and the situated nature of their knowledge, how that relates to standards and the knowledge used in their writing. It further discusses "Green Lungs", which serves as a sort of intermission. The book then turns to the politics of scale and their expression throughout the standard-making process. Finally, the book attempts to tie these various threads back together.
