ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book first explores one such space of encounter-the virtual negotiating table where loggers, environmentalists, and other affiliates of the Forest Stewardship Council came together to hammer out the criteria and indicators that defines sustainable forestry in Chile. It then traces FSC certification in Chile approach this uncertain environment with a set of motivations that cannot be reduced to simple rent-seeking. The book also explores the implicit and explicit inscription of the cultural politics of knowledge in standard-making. It further discusses that FSC-Chile has articulated itself into that imaginary with a collection of unexamined assumptions about scale, which place its efforts into a tenuous relationship with the ostensibly universal values of justice and sustainability. Finally, the book considers, its thought is to provide a juxtaposition, a possible corrective to the elisions and erasures of a technology of value.
