ABSTRACT

Avoiding burnout is a complex process. One part of the process is to evaluate our daily routines and rituals that lead to burnout. The second part of the process is taking small steps to replace these routines with others that will help us maintain a balance mentally, physically, and spiritually. Many factors can contribute to eventual burnout. Some include trying to meet the impossible demands of our profession, feeling unsupported by our leadership, and not regularly alleviating our stress. Other factors deal with how well we take care of ourselves and attend to our physical, mental, and spiritual health. Teachers are known for sacrificing their health in order to meet with the demands of our profession. This chapter talks about a movie called Freedom Writers, which is based on the real experiences of teacher Erin Gruwell, who positively impacts her troubled students.
