ABSTRACT
In the introduction to chapter 10 we said that evolution must build into an animal certain prime directives—to eat, to mate, and to avoid injury. Hunger, sex, and pain are basic motivations essential for survival. In addition, evolution has given mammals a large brain, with a cortex, which has certain other unanticipated consequences.
