ABSTRACT

For years I have sought an activity that would lead students to discover, or at least believe, the central limit theorem. I tried using digits from random telephone numbers and the ages of randomly selected pennies; I also observed Duane Hinders’s lima bean sampling. None of these provided a satisfactory result. Finally, at a workshop I attended, Landy Godbold demonstrated a graphing calculator program that sparked ideas for an effective activity. The activity is technology based and definitely student centered.
