ABSTRACT

The many hats that I wear as teacher and chair of mathematics at my middle school as well as a university faculty of mathematics education courses, provide unique opportunities for me to transform theory into practice. I really believe that I have the best of both worlds. Working with adolescents grounds me through the day-to-day challenges and rewards of teaching middle schoolers while informing my teaching of university students from a practical level—it's not just pie-in-the-sky theory; I'm living what I teach every single day. The trends in pedagogical content knowledge that I embrace as a teacher and university professor all translate into the best practices for teaching mathematics to university students from early childhood through high school and college. My roles complement each other and I wouldn't want to do one without the other.
